Here is some general information on repair service and transmissions.

General Transmission Repair Advice

Always require an estimate
The shop may need to perform a diagnostic test to determine the problem and know the total cost
It is always best to have a referral before using any shop
Keep routine maintenance current; it is vital to your vehicle’s health
If the problem is determined to be in a specialty area (such as transmission, exhaust, or collision repair) make sure the shop has the right knowledge, tools, and certifications to do the repairs.

General repair categories can include; brakes, wheel and tire, cooling systems, shocks, oil changes/lubrication and other minor repairs and diagnostics.
Do NOT use a general repair facility to perform major work, such as transmission repair.

There are many resources on the web you can use to help you both understand and diagnose transmission issues. The problem is, most of us don't have the time, tools, or skills to really do anything about it once we figure out what "might" be wrong.
